RW-M Studio During the 2018 RAAC Fall Art Tour

This is always a delightful annual event due to the volunteers who coordinate it all.  As a participating artist, I prepare for months not only with producing work but in the presentation of it.  I especially enjoyed the interactions I had with the studio visitors this year as they seemed to be very appreciative and knowledgeable.  The studio constantly evolves and is rearranged to suit the flow of visitors.  Enjoy the photographs and put the first weekend of November 2019 on your calendars.                                     The visitors get to try their hand with a palette knife.  Some are tentative and some are bold-almost like [...]

Some Fun-to-Do PR for the Scarf for Charity

As in the previous post, the Trinity Episcopal Church's new ECW Italian-made scarf benefiting charities is out.  It's based on my nest paintings and was designed by Liz Oliver.  The link to read about it can be found here:  http://www.trinwash.org/RAPPAHANNOCK-SCARF/   In the meantime, check out some of the PR for the scarf.       [...]

With Limited Time, a Sketchbook Is Handy

The first attempt at producing something meaningful or experimental in a sketchbook began out of pure boredom.  I was the shopkeeper in a co-op gallery for the day.  I had nothing better to do, so I just kept drawing.  I had the intention of continuing this, but mundane matters kept interfering and then I simply put the idea aside.     A friend and fellow artist makes a habit of sketching when she is able to slow down.  Somehow it clicked that I needed to give this another go. It just never dawned on me that doing this might be just the ticket for the [...]

Artwork for Charity

It's kind of fun for a painter to see a piece of artwork evolve from a simple design into wearable art....and all for charity.  I was asked to design a Save the Date card and an invitation for the 2017 Summer Safari, an event held each year by the Piedmont Environmental Council, Shenandoah National Park Trust, and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.  The items to be included in the design were many of the projects or entities representing each charity.  I turned in the image immediately below and the committee took over from there.         I came up with the 12"X16" pen [...]

Soup & Soul, March 18. 2017

Thank you to RAAC, Sallie & Tod Morgan, and to Nancy & Dick Raines for their help in being able to accomplish this with ease. Thank you to Emily Harris, for taking these photographs and for being my "Vanna White." I was asked to give this talk about my evolvement as a painter and about my creative process. I went through buckets of old photographs, slides, & newspaper articles in order to display on the screen and to help me realize what was beneficial in aiding my work. The experience of creating and giving the talk proved to be a joy.                   [...]

Why Would I Combine Pen & Ink, Watercolor, and Oil in One Painting?

During the recent RAAC (Rappahannock Association for Arts & the Community) Studio & Gallery Tour I was asked why I would combine oil, watercolor, and pen & ink in one painting. The short, rather flippant answer, would be: "Why not?" There probably is an underlying reason worth exploring and the next time I'm asked this question, I will refer the questioner to this blog post. [...]
